Despite the proliferation of networks and self-publishing mechanisms, censorship is even more complex for society across states, nations and the internet. Steve Kurtz (Critical Art Ensemble) and Egyptian artist and curator Shady El Noshokaty draw on their experience of censorship to talk about the importance of freedom of speech and the role artists can have on challenging states’ monopoly on knowledge.

Proposal for the Establishment of an International Association for Media Arts Sustainability

Proposal for the Establishment of an International Association for Media Arts Sustainability

We propose to establish an international association for all those engaged in the preservation, conservation, documentation, and long-term access to media art.

For a complex range of reasons, many works of media art can no longer be presented, and their histories are disappearing without a trace.

This association will promote collaboration and advocate the sustainability, understanding and appreciation of media art heritage. It will:

provide and foster channels of communication

encourage peer exchange

share tools and ways of working

identify and engage with new challenges

promote new ways of understanding media art

provide inspiration and resources for curators, artists, and scholars

help build new audiences

recognize and build upon existing knowledge and resources
